Steel Pulse (MSSL) hosted Vereinigung Erzgebirge (PA) on a warm April Sunday (4/28/2024) in the USASA National Amateur Cup Quarterfinals. The away side, Vereinigung Erzgebirge, is one of the most historic clubs in the US, boasting almost 100 years of history (est 1931), rich cultural heritage, and 4 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup appearances. They represent the USL of PA and Eastern Pennsylvannia in the cup.
The match started off well for Steel Pulse, with VE’s goalkeeper Connor Ford making several incredible saves to keep the match level. Derek Antonini and Chris Baker were able to create chances for VE, with Jean K. Kofi, RJ Fuentes, Emmanuel Oluessi, and Ramzey Hasssen initiating the offense for Steel Pulse. Finally, in the 30′ minute, RJ Fuentes initiated a stunning run through the VE lines with the help of delightful backheel assist from Ramzey Haseen to put the Pulse up 1-0. A minute later, VE earned a set piece in Pulse territory, and Derek Antonini was able to find the equalizer at the back post. The score remained level at the half.
The Pulse continued to find a flurry of chances throughout the second half, but misses and heroics from Ford kept the score level. Just when it seemed the match may head to penalties, Emmanuel Oluessi sprang RJ Fuentes for a delightful through pass in the 82′ minute. Fuentes forced the VE defense and goalkeeper to commit, before playing a delightful ball across the box, which was headed home by Diarra Zoumana (former Loudoun United). The home fans and MSSL/ Pulse supporters went wild, as the Pulse were able to secure victory in the last few minutes of the game.
Steel Pulse will take on familiar opponents Christos FC in the next round of the Amateur Cup on May 19, in a rivalry that has come to be know as the “Maryland El Clasico.” Stay tuned for location and broadcast information.
